Bei den Porzellan-Leuchten CATERPILLAR habe ich Abluftrohre aus dem Baumarkt abgeformt und in etwas Neues verwandelt. Die gestalterische Metamorphose erklärt sich so: Für den Porzellanguss benötige ich ein Gipsnegativ des Urmodells als Gussform. Es ist jedoch unmöglich, ein verformtes Abluftrohr fehlerfrei in Gips abzuformen – Abbrüche an der Oberfläche des Formmaterials sind vorprogrammiert. Diese „Fehler“ nutze ich als Gestaltungsmittel, denn sie brechen die industrielle Perfektion des Rohres und erzeugen die Lebendigkeit, die ich suche. Die muschelartige Materialität, das helle Weiß des Porzellans und seine Lichtdurchlässigkeit vollenden die Transformation: Was vorher Abluftrohr war, ist nun ein Glühwurm!
For the CATERPILLAR porcelain lamps I molded flexible air ducts from the hardware store and transformed them into something new. This creative metamorphosis can be explained as follows: For porcelain casting, I need a plaster negative of the master model as a mold. However, it is impossible to flawlessly mold a deformed air duct in plaster – cracks on the surface of the molding material are inevitable. I use these “errors” as a design element, because they break the industrial perfection of the duct and create that kind of vitality I am looking for. The shell-like materiality, the porcelain’s bright white, and its translucency complete the transformation: What used to be an air duct is now a glowworm!
